| Top Five Books for Turnaround Church Ministry |
Compiled by David Hyatt
Spring 2006
#1
Once and Future Church by Loren Mead. Explains how things have changed in our culture/world, and how the location of our mission has really changed from far away (foreign lands) to nearby (our communities). Mead presents the paradigms for the church and how the Christendom paradigm is not working and coming apart. He advocates a new paradigm is needed. Key book to understanding the times we are in.
#2
Turn Around Strategies for the Small Church by Ron Crandall. 100 small churches (started under 100) were identified as having “turned around”. Crandall studied them for basic principles and action steps that were in common and made the turnaround ministry successful. Many great principles and specific illustrations and ideas to use in any setting.
#3
If It Could Happen Here… by Jeff Patton. A great example of a small United Methodist church (avg. 55 in attendance) that decided to grow in rural Pennsylvania (late ‘80's, into the ‘90's). Patton details their journey, the challenges and pitfalls, and the six key levers that made their turnaround (to over 144) happen. Excellent in seeing the process that is important to go through on the way to turning around a church.
#4
Hit the Bullseye by Paul Borden. The story of how one region of the American Baptist church (starting with 225 churches in northern California ), engaged in a major turnaround effort and, after 5 years, 70% of their churches were growing. Borden tells how the denominational staff became the leaders in this effort as they clearly decided to “serve the churches as consultants,” and the principles and processes that made the turnaround happen. ('98-'02)
#5
Waking to God's Dream by Dick Wills. A “must read” for every UMC leader to understand what it takes to not be asking God to bless what you are doing but to be able to do what God is blessing . This is the wonderful story of the transformation of a pastor and subsequently the transformation of his congregation, with principles and ideas that will be helpful to all pastors and congregations. |
