Consulting with Churches, on site, in the church, walking along
with the church through transition, working as a ‘teaching
consultant,’ helping the church develop a strategic plan and
beginning to implement it.
Strategic Planning
involves Four Stages:
1. Assessment-
“Where are we today (how did we get here?)?”
--congregational survey, Healthy
Church Index (HCI)
--demographic studies, PERCEPT, local resources
--church history, trends, LIFE CYCLE
--Staff Assessment, using “Team Assessment” tool
--observations, listening groups, etc.
--what’s our Mission (make Disciples…)
2. Visioning
- “Where does God call us from here?”
--What’s God’s Vision for this church?
--brainstorm, dreaming, 3-5 years
down the road
--explore resources, conferences, “best practices”
--ongoing steering team, or weekend
retreats
--town hall meetings of congregation
3. Planning
- “How do we get to where God wants us to be?”
--Action Areas identified, Strategic
initiatives, major goals
--strategies/action steps to accomplish each Objective
--put it all together into a Master’s Plan, or Strategic Plan
--buy-in, ownership, approval of Board/leadership and
Congregation is a Big Key to future success!
4.
Implementation – Just do it!!! This is probably the hardest
stage!
--build in accountability and ownership by
Board, this is Plan for the Church to follow
--keep in touch, check ups, evaluation, future planning
